Anyone with ties to southern Ohio in the 70’s can relate to this book. Your faith in humanity might just be a tad bit restored if you do.

What does it take to rehabilitate it? Last year for me the surprise book I read was So Much Blue, a tale of an artist haunted by an act deep in his path and how it left a wound to fester on his soul, and how in the end he finds redemption. If you’ve ever spent time in Southern Ohio you will recognize it in the pages of this book.

Loaned to me by my sister, The Essay is a short novel set in Ohio’s Appalachia in the ‘s, a region of my state I frequently drive through on my way to northern Virginia to visit family. I love it so much. This should be required reading for all students in colleges of education…maybe also for high school students.

In this novel set deep in the Appalachia region of Southern Ohio, a young boy named Jimmy Lee Hickam grows up, dirt poor with an abusive hard-drinking father, a mother and brothers who have little time for ezsay. It was utterly engaging, captivating, and a wonderful story. Angels exist in this tale in the form of Miss Singletary and Jimmy Lee’s football coach.

I knew then that this book was something special. What struck me so in this book was the strong message that good teachers are invaluable in the lives of students, teachers who believe in them, who encourage them in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds to persevere and strive for something…in this case for a college education.

Escape from this world to something better is just not a dream anyone can afford. However if you’re not in a spaknotes club you should read it anyway. I will be recommending this to both of my book clubs. Gives great snapshot of the world of poverty and challenges faced to ever succeed. How did I not know about this author until now?!
